Pankration is the oldest term of hand to hand combat known today as Mixed Martial Arts. Its beginning dates back to ancient Greece where the first Olympic Games took place. The word “Pankration” means “All Powers”. Competitors were allowed to use striking as well as grappling techniques. Pankration gave birth to Western Boxing and Wrestling which became two separate Olympic events.
Kickboxing // Muay Thai
Kickboxing has been introduced to the Western World in the early 1970′s as the ring sport similar to Boxing. Before that Kickboxing has only being known in Asia and Thailand as Thai-Boxing or Muay-Thai. Kickboxing includes punches, kicks, blocks and evasive maneuvers. In addition, depending on the style, kickboxing may also involve knee strikes, elbow strikes, clinching, and even takedowns or throws.
A no-gi focused grappling style blending techniques from many different martial arts. Clinching, take-downs, positional control and escapes are all part of the style.
Jiu-Jitsu // Judo
The roots of Jiu-Jitsu rest with the samurai warrior. In the old days the empty-hand combat grappling and striking techniques played only a secondary role compared to their weapons skills. Modern day Jiu-Jitsu concentrates mainly on open hand techniques.
There are many styles of Jiu-Jitsu. One that we find the most effective is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu due to the most sophisticated use of the human leverage.
The main advantage of Jiu-Jitsu is in the use of technique over the brute strength to the advantage of smaller the more flexible and mobile person.
Please note that although we do use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques, we are NOT a school nor are we a part of any Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team or Belt Grading system. In our Jiu-Jitsu class at Columbia Martial Arts we do wear full Judo/Jiu-Jitsu uniforms with the Belts Colors according to our internal Mixed Martial Arts System.
All students attending CMA Jiu-Jitsu class must be registered in CMA Mixed Martial Arts System.
Columbia Martial Arts Academy would like to extend our gratitude and respect to thank Professor Helio Gracie for revealing his incredibly effective system to the World of Martial Arts.
